THE WORLD CUP IN ÅRE

– A Brief History

Åre has a long and proud history and tradition in alpine ski racing, from Sweden’s first downhill competition, Årebragden, in 1921 to the World Championships in 1954, 2007 and 2019. Alpine competitions – from small local races to major international events – have helped drive the development of Åre into the internationally renowned ski resort it is today, contributing to infrastructure, ski area expansion and long-term growth.

On 8–9 February 1969, Åre and Sweden hosted the World Cup for the very first time. Ten athletes took part in the men’s slalom and giant slalom, and France swept the field with victories in both races.

In 1971, women’s giant slalom was held on Swedish snow at this level for the first time, with the legendary Annemarie Moser-Pröll claiming the top spot. 2015 marked the year of the 100th World Cup race held in Åre
